2004 Press Releases

CareSource celebrates 15 years of success

DAYTON, Ohio, May 20, 2004 – CareSource, Ohio’s largest Medicaid managed health-care plan, is proud to be celebrating its 15-year anniversary in May 2004. Although 15 years is not long in some industries, it is a tremendous milestone in the business of Medicaid managed care.

CareSource began in 1989 as Dayton Area Health Plan and is now the oldest Medicaid managed-care plan in the state. When DAHP began, Ohio had five other Medicaid managed-care plans; all have since left the market or gone out of business. By 1996, Ohio had 17 Medicaid managed-care plans; only five are still in operation. With almost 336,000 members, CareSource is by far the largest Medicaid plan in the state and the eighth-largest in the nation. It is also the second-fastest-growing Medicaid HMO and the fifth-fastest-growing HMO of any type in the nation.

President and CEO Pamela B. Morris attributes CareSource’s success to its vision, its focus and its people. “Our mission has always been to make a difference in the lives of underserved people by improving their health care,” Morris said. “We have remained focused on that, even when it meant pursuing federal legislation to get an exemption from the requirement that 25 percent of our membership not be enrolled in Medicaid. Finally, we never could have survived, much less thrived, for 15 years without our loyal and dedicated employees.”

CareSource marked its 15-year anniversary with a reception for employees and board members on May 12 at the Marriott Hotel in Dayton. Morris presented high points of the company’s history, and several board members and employees spoke.
